Preparing for your visit

• To plan on accomodation please read this document.
• If you would like to rent a car, please read this document.
• If you would like to use a USC travel agent, with possible discounts, please read this document and contact one of the agents through their 800 number.
• If you are coming from abroad, or are in the USA on a visa, please be aware that we are required to adhere to new strict government rules for compensating international visitors.
• Once you are in town, here is how you get to CIT-USC.

Computing

• You will be given a computer account at the Center. Please change your password at your initial login. To change your password, log in to the citusc.usc.edu server using ssh at a Linux command prompt: " ssh citusc " and type " passwd ".  Enter your old password, then your new password, and again to confirm.
• Your email address while at citusc is <account name>@citusc.usc.edu
• There are 20 workstations running Redhat Linux and Windows 98 available in the center for your use.  Selection of the operating system  to use (Linux or Windows) can be done at boot time.
• There are several printer queues available under Linux: lp, sing, 2up, color. To specify a printer queue, use the '-P' argument to lpr, e.g.:  " lpr -P 2up "

 

lp	Duplex (two-sided) printing on the HP Laserjet.  This is the default  printer queue
sing	Simplex (single-sided) printing on the HP Laserjet.
2up	Duplex printing with two pages of text on each page of paper
color	Color printing on the HP DeskJet in the common area.  Please use sparingly.

• If you bring your own laptop, you can obtain a network connection by plugging it into the spare ethernet port on the back of the workstations, using the yellow cable which should be already present. Plug in the ethernet cable and configure your laptop to obtain an IP address via DHCP; for Windows, perform the following steps: Click on the start menu, then 'Settings', then 'Control Panel'. Double click on the 'Network' control panel. Double click on the 'TCP/IP' item. Select 'Obtain an IP address automatically', and press 'OK', and 'OK' again to close the control panel. If you are asked to restart the computer, select 'Yes'. When the computer restarts you should be able to access the Internet.

• Your account will expire one month after your visit unless you make special arrangements.

Key Code

• The key code you will be given is confidential. It is only for your own use, and you should not give it to anyone. Every time you enter the Center your code is registered electronically. This security measure is taken for protection against break-ins. Your cooperation in keeping your code secure is appreciated.

Publications and acknowledgment of the Center

• If your work at the Center leads to a publication, you should use the Center's preprint numbering system to register your preprint and request a preprint number. See bottom of webpage at http://citusc.usc.edu/preprints/ . A preprint can be registered only from certain USC or Caltech computers. If you have a problem please e-mail the information to our administrative assistant (citusc@physics.usc.edu) to register your preprint.
• If your work benefits from your visit at the Center, the usual acknowledgment is expected.
• If you use the Center's address on your publication, the correct address is

Caltech-USC Center for Theoretical Physics, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA 90089-2536.
• Unless some special circumstances arise you are expected to type your own documents. We are sorry that we cannot provide the staff to assist you in this job on a regular basis.

 

Reimbursement of expenses

• The Center will reimburse the expenses of invited visitors up to a maximum per diem rate determined by the university, plus travel, if these were stated as part of the invitation. Please note that if you are in the USA on a visa there are new government rules for compensating international visitors.
• The visitor is expected to be at the Center for the period of the payment. If the visitor interrupts the visit, or goes to another institution (other than Caltech) for a period of time and receives reimbursement of travel or per-diem expenses, he/she should report the absence to the administrative assistant (citusc@physics.usc.edu) and ask for an adjustment of the reimbursement.

 

Departure

• Please provide any receipts about travel or hotels that may be helpful to generate your reimbursement.
• Transfer all your files to your computer at home institution because your account will expire one month after your departure.
• If you received a key, please return it to the administrative assistant, your final check will not be mailed until keys are returned.
