MODERN PHYSICS - RADIOACTIVITY

MP.5(1) GEIGER COUNTER
A Geiger counter serves the purpose of showing radiation being detected. Its accuracy is ± 20%. It can show background radiation and many counts when an X-ray source is brought near it.

MP.5(2) DIFFUSION CLOUD CHAMBER
Theory of Operation: The metal plate in the bottom of the chamber is cooled to a low temperature by its contact through the rod with a dry ice mixture. This sets up a temperature gradient in the chamber and a layer of super-cooled alcohol vapor is formed just above the plate. Small droplets of this vapor condense on the ions formed by the alpha and beta particles emanating from the radioactive tip, composed of Lead 210. These droplets are visible in the beam of light and appear as tracks. Gamma rays and cosmic rays interact with the gas in the chamber to produce electrons, giving evidence of their presence by short, crooked tracks.
