Gerd Bergmann works in the field of low dimensional systems, such as very thin metal films. At low temperatures the electrons in such a system behave as waves and show interference phenomena. He uses this interference in the presence of a magnetic field to study the dynamics of the conduction electrons in real time on a time scale of pico-seconds. Recently he used this real-time spectroscopy to investigate and discover magnetic surface impurities.
